Our Mission
The LearnGujarati initiative represents a pioneering effort in the preservation and development of the Gujarati language, incorporating a comprehensive database of over 4.5 million words. The project leverages the power of information technology to enhance the accessibility, popularization, and evolution of Gujarati. It serves as a modest yet significant step towards modernizing the language and advancing Gujarati language resources. The LearnGujarati Project is the result of the unwavering dedication and visionary leadership of Mrs. Dhara Desai, who devoted many years to its development. Mrs. Desai's core mission was to promote the Gujarati language on a global scale.
Building on her vision, the LearnGujarati team launched Let’s Learn Gujarati, an innovative and interactive platform designed to provide users with an engaging and accessible means of learning Gujarati. The platform offers a structured, step-by-step learning approach that includes activity-based lessons, audiovisual content, and various other interactive tools designed to enhance the learning experience. In its Phase I launch, the website introduces foundational lessons in Vowels, Consonants, and Numbers, with plans to gradually expand the content in alignment with the standard Gujarati curriculum. While great care has been taken in the development of the Let’s Learn Gujarati platform, we acknowledge the potential for further improvement and are receptive to constructive feedback and valuable suggestions from users to ensure its continuous enhancement.
About Gujarati Language
- Gujarati is an Indo-Aryan language that belongs to the larger Indo-European language family.
- It has evolved over centuries from Old Western Rajasthani, a language spoken between 1100 and 1500 AD, which is the ancestral precursor to both Gujarati and Rajasthani languages.
- Primarily spoken in the Indian state of Gujarat, Gujarati serves as the state’s principal language. It is also widely spoken in the neighboring Union Territories of Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Additionally, due to the large Gujarati diaspora, it is spoken in various countries across the globe.
- With an estimated 46.1 million native speakers, Gujarati ranks as the 26th most spoken language in the world. It holds significant cultural and historical importance, not only in India but also in global communities.
- Gujarati is considered one of the westernmost Indo-Aryan languages, sharing this distinction with languages like Romany and Sindhi. The language’s rich history and cultural heritage are reflected in its literature, music, dance, and religious practices.
- Moreover, Gujarati has had a profound impact on global history and politics, as it was the first language of several notable historical figures, including:
- Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (Mahatma Gandhi), the Father of India, who used Gujarati to communicate his vision of non-violence and social reform.
- Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, known as the Iron Man of India, whose leadership played a pivotal role in India’s independence and the integration of princely states.
- The Gujarati language continues to thrive, adapting to the digital age while preserving its traditional roots. Its role as a mother tongue for millions of people and as a cultural bridge within India and abroad solidifies its place as a vital and vibrant language of the Indo-Aryan family.
